About the Artist.
Christina Shoucair is a 23-year-old London-born artist originally from Beirut, Lebanon. She completed her Fine Arts degree in 2021 from Georgetown University and is now working in the contemporary art world. Her artwork delves into the complexity and diversity of the human psychological experience through a mind, body, and soul theme. Although her preferred medium is acrylic paint, she has also adopted an appreciation for printmaking and mixed media art.
Artist Statement: The Vision
Mind Body Soul
When reduced to the simplest form, our humanness encompasses three parts - the mind, body, and soul. This collection draws on each of these components and captures our shared humanity whilst also incorporating realistic and imaginary elements. In my exploration of anatomy, I transform scientific depictions of flesh and muscle into bursts of color and pattern, and in my figurative painting, I portray the nude body as organic shapes in space.
A distinctive feature of my work is the way that I capture skin as each brushstroke of warm and cool tones adds depth and dimension to the surface. The use of texture achieved through multiple layers of acrylic paint, in rich colors, aims to lure the eyes and probe viewers into an alternate reality. In my newest work, I extend beyond acrylic paint and explore multiple mediums incorporating charcoal and watercolor to achieve softness and fluidity in my map paintings. I use mixed media and textile art to breathe life into each page of my altered book. Together, these artworks tell a relatable story about what it means to be alive while simultaneously offering a new perspective on oneself and the world around us.
